Last month, John Piper announced that he will be taking a leave of absence from his ministry at both Bethlehem Baptist Church and Desiring God because “the precious garden of my home needs tending.” After 41 years of marriage and 35 years of ministry, Dr. Piper recognized the need to take a break from the latter to tend to the former. (4/13/10 Clarification – a break from ministry to tend to his marriage.)
Some in the Christian blogosphere have taken it upon themselves to judge Dr. Piper, to read into his statement (which can be found here), and generally give the impression that they share a common heritage with Balaam’s mount in Numbers 22.
I say, BRAVO! Dr. Piper’s move took tremendous intestinal fortitude and spiritual discernment. Regardless of the nature of the “sins” he needs to deal with, I applaud his move and I will be praying for both the Pipers and the elders of Bethlehem Baptist.
